The Hydroyoyo was inspired by the VSCO girl trend. One of the most popular products that define this style is the Hydro Flask: a double wall vacuum insulated stainless steel water bottle. The Hydroyo emulates the general shape of the infamous HydroFlask.
To go into more depth, the final hydroyo design consists of 5 pieces but only 4 distinct parts. The top of the yoyo has an injection molded Metal Ring which press fits onto the first body piece which we call the Bottom of the Top. In between the Metal Ring and the Bottom of the Top is a thermoformed sheet of ice. As mentioned above, the gap where the Ice layer fits is wide enough that the Ice spins as the yoyo moves. We hoped to make the Ice/Water inside seem more fluid with this design choice. The bottom half of the yoyo also consists of a second Bottom of the Top piece. This piece was originally going to be unique, however to save time and reduce the number of molds we needed to make we opted to use the bottom of the top on both sides of the yoyo. To complete the bottom of the yoyo, we added the final part, the Bottom of the Bottom which press fits on to the Bottom of the Top. The layout of these parts can be seen in the diagram below.
All of this came together to create the Hydroyo. We had hoped to include the recognizable Hydro Flask cap and strap. However, given the constraints of the semester we didn’t have enough time to make a cap for all yoyos. If we were to continue making this yoyo, we would want to add the cap!
